Surveillance Radar

All transport category aircraft are tracked by radar (unless beyond radar range) for the entire duration of that flight,
Air Traffic Control is responsible for separating aircraft,
But what happens if radar fails? Not a problem since:
- aircraft are still separated based on position reports,
- aircraft are equipped with Traffic Collision Alert Systems.
That said-radar has its limitations:
- can't "see" over the horizon (e.g. an ocean) or in mountainous areas. In our Workshop, we'll discuss the new satellite-based technology (ADS-B), now being phased in.
